Qualified in accountancy, experienced in leisure.
It’s on the tin and it’s what we are.

Accounting & General is the accountancy, tax and business advice practice for small and medium sized businesses covering Devon and the south west, based at Galmpton, twixt Brigham, Paignton and Totnes, eight miles from Torquay.

We cover all business types – we just like to know you and feel involved in your endeavours. We have particular specialism in hospitality, retail, tourism and property management sectors, based on personal commercial experience.

We are a small but perfectly formed team of individuals, client interface is led by Practice Manager Claire Carter ACCA, covering all aspects of a full-service accountancy practice. We are a team of nine, the right size to cover all needs at all times, yet still know you on a persona; basis, your motivations and requirements.

Our office has the modern technology that accountants need these days. Top of the range ‘TaxCalc’ powers our accountancy and taxation programmes. We operate ‘in the cloud’ with Xero, Liberty Accounts, Quickbooks and Sage. Moneysoft for payroll. And a speciality are our own in-house designed spreadsheets – keeping your costs to a minimum at all times.

…and for the record. We do not work in a stuffy office, behind a front door grimed in urban dirt, with an aspidistra in the waiting room that depresses you as you walk in. (As you may find elsewhere at …. & Co.)

This is our excuse to include a Monty Python sketch on our website!

Meet the Accounting and General Team

Claire
Claire
Claire is a qualified chartered certified accountant (ACCA) and FMAAT, though modest such you wouldn’t know it! Before joining us ten years ago, she had worked for a couple of the more crusty fusty accountants in Torbay on her career path. So, very experienced in the essential but dull side of accountancy and tax that we all need. Leaving us for a spell for the rough and tumble of the commercial world – car retail, tungsten mining (so used to working in the dark) and latterly real estate management, she returned in 2025 at the top of our tree, to give our clients the benefit of her rounded experienced approach to client needs.
In her spare time(!) she is chair of Brixham Theatre, but she brings no drama here!
Chris
Chris
Chris is also a qualified chartered certified accountant, but so old he’s FCCA! Starting in his father’s accountancy practice ‘just after the war’ (just joking), he then went into industry, mobile phones and carpets amongst his many experiences.
An all-rounder for us, he pulls together monthly accounts as well as producing annual accounts and tax returns for smaller clients. He claims to support Liverpool FC, but as he loves to just quietly crack on with the work, we don’t poke the tiger about this flaw in not supporting his local team – Plymouth Argyle.
Alan
Alan
Alan rounds off the certified trio! (FCCA). He started the practice in 2009 after an illustrious career as accountant in industries ranging from textiles, to cider, road repairs, specialist engineering, meat retail and Butlin’s! Then latterly as a general manager of hotels, pubs, an attraction and a holiday island. For us he has responsibility for our legal side and gives direction and experience, a hand with more complex businesses and tax positions. Available for commercial consultancy for hospitality clients (business turnaround/improvement). That is when he’s not travelling in his beloved Iceland, the country that is not the shop!
Will
Will
Will is our number one qualified accounting technician (MAAT) and accounts manager. He liaises with clients and leads the engine room that crunches the numbers. Starting his career here from university, he flew the nest and got experience elsewhere before realising how green the grass is in Galmpton and returning to the fold. He says he goes paddle boarding and does come to work with the occasional injury, poor fellow also supports Southampton. He does have great taste in music though.
Tasmin
Tasmin
Tasmin, our second accounting technician (MAAT) is our ‘can do general’. Our payroll specialist and senior in production of management accounts, and because she gets in early, with the patience of a saint, she harasses HMRC from 8am on the dot with any phone communications we need to have.
Our second member of staff with experience in property management administration. We suspect her hobby is learning to drive!
Shannon
Shannon
Shannon completes the trio of accounting technicians.
She jumped across from another highly regarded practice in the Bay, with a CV brimming with experience in small business accounts and tax. Living on the family farm, de facto she’s our farm accounts specialist and has entrepreneurial experience on the side.
Presently enjoying maternity leave, she’ll be back with us in June 2025. We can’t wait!
Olivia
Olivia
Olivia is our ACCA trainee and our second senior looking after management accounts, as well as progressing with our smaller annual accounts and tax returns and supporting payroll. We believe staff being generalists across all disciplines for resilience of support. With an unlimited capacity to take on new learning, instruct Olivia once, the job is then completed rapidly and spot on.
Whilst no lion tamer she is experienced in the art of Taekwondo, though we can’t vouch for that!
Katy
Katy
Katy is studying for her AAT qualification and great with clients as she thinks outside of the box (we hate that cliché too), understanding their motivations as well as needs. This empathy may have been engendered by Katy’s past working in various hospitality and retail roles from pubs, to cafes, weddings and events and even a well-known local farm shop
She finds client purchase receipts interesting, which is a good thing, as she processes a lot of them whilst undertaking their monthly bookkeeping, as well as processing payroll.
Kasia
Kasia
Kasia (Casha), also part qualified AAT rounds off our bookkeeping team and only our second staff member holding a degree. We share her time with a well known pub chain where she works as a waitress and enjoys the benefit of the tips from her excellent service. Like Katy, another staff member that knows our work from the other side. Not sure if she has spare time from family commitments, including regular visits back to her native Poland, kindly bringing us back national food treats to expand our culinary horizons. (Well, much better than Claire’s infamous avocado cake!)
